“Left”, definitely is not in a good position as far as the numbers are considered, either. But it’s not about the quantity but the quality of the Left that makes it relevant to the present political scenario in India. Despite the fact, that Congress party is the leading opposition party in the parliament, as far as, the numbers are concerned but the real fight that "Right" is facing, is from the "Left" that too from the outside of Parliament. All the issues like Rohit Vemula suicide case, JNU protests and Anti-CAA protest, have strengthen the base of Left ideology in Indian youth more profoundly than ever. Today, there is a trend called “Independent journalism” and the majority of those independent journalists are Left leaning (at least the popular ones).
But does it mean that “Right” is trailing in the fight? The answer to that question is, no. Then, where is the effort put in by the young comrades going? Although it is hitting the walls of “Right “with full force but the “Flag Bearer” of the right wing politics in India, BJP has a “Captain American” shield known as “The Modi Factor”. Indians, in general, as a society, have a fond of strong characters, which allows them to shield themselves from taking risks, so that they can blame the leader, in case anything goes wrong in the future. They hesitate to ask questions but are very good followers. You can easily find millions under a banner but very few dare to indulge in an ideological debate based on core issues of human ethics and dignity. All, most of the Indians can do for a debate, is to yell and yell fanatically so that they are more audible but they should be focused on being more communicable.
The problem with the current BJP government is that it is heavily relying on Mr. Modi and any party or group that gets dependent on a single personality, suffers in the intellectual loss of other members. The combination of unitarianism and blind following has resulted into moral and ethical decay of our society many times before. Like in Mahabharata when Bheeshma gave preference to the king (his father Shantanu) over the state, it resulted in weak successors and ultimately in the war of Mahabharata. Congress faced the same problem after the death of Indira Gandhi. Congress chose a person having no interest in politics over a hoard of experienced and capable leaders as they also had sheltered themselves under the strong “Indira character” like the successors of Shantanu did under Bhishma and like present BJP leaders are doing under Modi.
So, is everything right in the “Left”? Absolutely not, as Indian “Left” is selective in its approach and attacks the Hindu fundamentals while totally ignoring the Islamist conservatism which is pure sign of biasness and opportunism on their part. They are doing the same thing, which Congress did to Muslims of India and that is, keeping the Muslim clerics and conservatives happy and letting them dictate their authority over Muslim masses by keeping them uneducated and poor. They have shifted their stance from being secular to anti-Hindu and this does not go well with the majority which makes “Right” more strong.
Now, the emergence of strong centre is must in India but the voter has not many choices in front of him. Congress, until it remains a party run by the Gandhis, cannot be a good option. A “socially more Left BJP” and “economically more Right BJP” is what seems a best option for the near future, until a more decentralized and stable “Centre” appears in the landscape of Indian Politics.
